Webster's Dictionary defines alcoholism as: a chronic disorder marked by excessive and usually compulsive drinking of alcohol leading to psychological and physical dependence or addiction. We know it to be far more than that. Alcoholism destroys families, friendships, careers, and lives. It robs an individual of their health, dignity, reputation, and sanity.
All to often we hear these words, " If he new what the was doing to his family he'd just stop", or "She should just stop after a couple, it's just a matter of will power. She must just be weak". Believe it or not, an alcoholics strong will often stands in the way of them getting the help they need so much. They believe that they will figure it out and learn how to control their drinking and that they do have the power to stop at any time. The belief that they are in control may keep them from seeking the help that they need.
