What is treatment for Co-Occurring Disorders? The actual term, Integrated Dual Disorders is used for those who suffer from some type of addiction along with suffering from some form of mental illness. The treatment of Co-Occurring Disorders is an approach that helps people recover by offering mental health and substance abuse services together, in one setting, at the same time. Normally a team of the same clinicians provide the patient with a personalized treatment plan for both the mental health and substance abuse. A wide variety of services will be offered in stages because some of the services are important early in the treatment plan while other services are important later on.

The mental health issues may consist of issues such as depression, bipolar disorder or anxiety and the addiction side could include alcohol or drug addiction. When these issues are combined, the most effective form of treatment for the patient is treatment for co-occurring disorders. This allows the patient to work on the mental health issue while receiving treatment for the addiction that will not conflict with each other or with medication prescribed for one or the other.

Do not make the mistake of thinking that the addiction is caused by the mental health issue or that the mental health issue is caused by the addiction. While they are closely linked, one does not directly cause the other. Mental disorders are caused by a complex interplay of genetics, the environment and other outside factors. Drug or alcohol abuse used when a mental disorder is present may e the factor to push the patient over the edge.

It is usually difficult to diagnose and plan a treatment for co-occurring disorders. It takes time to sort out what might be mental disorder and what may be a drug or alcohol problem. As always, denial will complicate the issues at hand. It is hard to admit a dependency on drugs or alcohol as well as being difficult to admit a mental disorder. Sometimes you may even find that you are ashamed of a mental disorder or an addiction.

The one thing to remember is that substance abuse problems and mental health issues do not go away when ignored and will likely even get worse. That is why Seacliff Recovery Center is here and ready to assist you with any type of substance abuse addiction or mental health issues. We offer a personalized treatment for co-occurring disorders and will stand with you every step of the way. We believe that the proper treatment plan is one that is tailored to fit your needs and our staff will sit down and discuss your issues in order to make certain that we have a correct diagnosis for your and tailor your treatment plan to achieve total success.

A 12 step dual diagnosis concerns a diagnosis of addiction to both alcohol and drugs. This usually begins with one or the other substance and as the addiction grows stronger the need for a stronger “fix” begins. This leads to the patient seeking out other forms of addiction to soothe the addiction which leads to a dual addiction of drugs and alcohol. Once the dual diagnosis has been made, the treatment program can begin.

Alcoholism is an addiction that creates the need for a stronger “fix” sometimes leading to a stronger form of alcohol but more often leading to the addition of some sort of drug to give a kick to the alcohol. You may find that a case of beer daily is suddenly not providing the relief from the day’s problems so you might add a few pills to help take the edges off. After several times of popping pills it becomes a second addiction leading to the dual diagnosis.

The strength of a dual addiction is twice as hard to break as a single addiction and therefore requires a more structured program. The dual addiction needs this structure in order to allow the patient to realize that they must break not one, but two addictions. This must be done over a period of time in a very organized and structured manner

The 12 Step Dual Diagnosis plan is a set of guiding principles outlining a course of recovery from addiction, compulsion or other behavioral. These steps consist of admitting that one cannot control one’s addiction, recognizing a higher power that can give strength, examining past errors with the help of a sponsor, making amends for these errors, learning to live a new life with a new code of behavior and helping others who suffer from the same addictions.

The 12 step dual diagnosis plan can provide the basis for a strong foundation on which to build a strong new addiction free life full of happiness and joy. Once the program is completed, the patient is able to lead a life that is free from past aggressions and failures and walk into a bright and welcoming future.

At Seacliff Recovery Center, our goal is to provide our patients with all of the tools to successfully complete a 12 step dual diagnosis program and begin a new life that will lead to that happiness and joy. We deal with all types of addictions and offer a vast array of recovery programs tailored to meet the needs of the individual patient. We are here to provide our patients with the care that is needed until the addictions are broken and the patient is well on the way to building a solid foundation for recovery.

In today’s society, we often see stars entering a long term rehab center for help with an addiction problem. The issue is that they are usually entering after a run-in with the law that requires them to seek treatment in order to avoid a jail term for some alcohol or drug related charge. A much more effective method for a successful stay is to enter the treatment facility on your own volition because you want a better life. It is much better to enter the treatment center because you want to rather than to avoid criminal punishment.

If a person suffering from an addiction and truly wants to battle that addiction, why would they pursue anything other than a long term rehab center for treatment? Addiction is more than just physical. Long term rehab centers are more successful because they realize that addictions are not just a physical problem. As with any addiction, the underlying emotional and mental reasons why they sought out the addiction in the first place must be dealt with alongside the physical treatment. If these issues are not dealt with along with the physical problem, then the issues remain and a relapse is almost certain.

Any type of treatment that is not long term is not administered with the patient’s best interest at heart. While short term care allows the patient to return to their job, family and everyday life sooner, it also allows the greater possibility of a relapse and need for return to rehab. That is why a long term rehab center should always be preferred over the short-term treatment plan.

Whatever type of addiction you or a loved one may have, whether it is alcohol problems or illegal or prescription drugs, know that you are in safe hands with our trained professionals at Seacliff Recovery Center. At Seacliff Recovery Center we specialize in Residential Chemical Dependency Treatment, Dual Diagnosis, Chronic Relapse, Trauma Recovery and Extended Care treatment plans. We are here for you providing a personal treatment plan designed to see you through your personal needs and make sure that you receive the guidance you need to live an addiction free life.

At Seacliff Recovery Center, we know that getting clean requires courage, guidance and structure. That is why we work hard to strengthen your courage while providing the essential guidance needed to kick your habit in an atmosphere that is structured in a way that ensures your successful completion of our program and allows you to re-enter a life that is free of dependency issues. We believe that our treatment plans allow our clients to build a solid foundation of recovery and offer some of the best sober living California has to offer.

OxyContin®,is an opium derivative which has the same active ingredients as Percodan® or Percocet®. OxyContin® is intended for use by chronic pain sufferers. Oxycontin® addiction is a physical dependence that results from an individual being exposed to or abusing high doses of Oxycontin® for an extended period of time. The human body then quickly adapts and develops a tolerance for Oxycontin®. The addiction to Oxycontin® is so powerful that it produces cravings, these cravings for Oxycontin® are the result of its impact on the individual’s central nervous system and their pyschological state; the subconscious memory of using the drug often motivates the individual to seek more Oxycontin® resulting in extremely dangerous and often illegal activities.

The most commonly reported effects of long-term Oxycontin® abuse include:

• constipation
• fatigue
• dizziness
• nausea
• lightheadedness
• headache
• dry mouth
• pruritus
• diaphoresis

Some addicts also have a loss of appetite, nervousness, euphoria, anxiety, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dyspnea, and hiccups, although these symptoms appear very rarely, Oxycontin® can also cause impotence, enlarged prostate gland, and decreased testosterone secretion.

In high doses, overdoses, oxycodone® can cause shallow breathing, bradycardia, cold, clammy skin, apnea, hypotension, pupil constriction, circulatory collapse, respiratory arrest, and death.

Over the past few years, Seacliff Recovery Center Oxycontin® Treatment has been treating opiate addiction more then ever before. This past year alone, over 50 % of the clients that come to SRC for treatment have been addicted to Oxycontin®, oxycodone or other opiate drugs. Nearly all these clients were under the age of 25. Seacliff’s Oxycontin® addiction treatment program helps all addicts that are dealing with opiate addiction, but young people are the biggest population that we are treating in the past years. Finding a place that will approach a young person’s outlook on life, as an opiate addict is something that we do not take lightly. It is important for families looking for a Oxycontin® addiction treatment program to make sure that a specific opiate program is available.

Oxycontin® is one of the strongest and most frequently abused prescription drugs currently used in the US today. When abused Oxycontin® will produce a high much like pure heroin but with much worse consequences. A 5mg tab of OxyContin has as much active ingredient (oxycodone®) as one percocet, so chewing or snorting a 40mg OxyContin is basically like taking 8 percocets at once or a 80mg OxyContin® tab is like taking 16 percocets all at the same time.

OxyContin withdrawal symptoms include but are not limited to:

• perpetually being tired
• hot/cold sweats
• heart palpitations
• joints and muscles in constant pain
• vomiting
• nausea
• uncontrollable coughing
• diarrhea
• insomnia
• watery eyes
• excessive yawning
• depression
• coma
• death

Oxycontin® withdrawal symptoms can begin as soon as six hours after the last dose and can last up to one week or more. People who have gone through OxyContin® withdrawal compare the process to the intensity of heroin withdrawal.

As these stronger and more lethal form of opiates emerge, people are experiencing a more difficult Oxycontin® Treatment detox phase. The physical and psychological effects are far greater and more difficult to treat. This kind of Opiate ingrains itself deeper into the tissue of the organ and has longer side effects on the body and the mind. Years in the making, we have developed a Oxycontin® addiction treatment program that bring the best that the world has to offer when it comes to this kind of addiction. Our contracted detox service utilizes the most cutting edge Oxycontin® addiction treatment detox methods such as NTR or suboxone replacement to ease our clients through detox making this phase as comfortable as possible.

From the medical effects of Oxycontin® to social problems, Seacliff Recovery Center Oxycontin® addiction treatment brings solutions to the clients in a way that is tangible and easy to apply. Taking this into consideration we have put together to program that takes the mind, body, and spirit approach to the client’s lives. We think that this is the best way to bring the clients all of the Oxycontin® treatment opportunities that we have.

Are you in pain, overwhelmed, out-of-control?

If heroin has taken over your life or the life of someone you love, we can help. We have over 10 years of specialized experience in heroin addiction treatment and continue to be one the most successful treatment programs for this addiction.

Heroin is a semi-synthetic opioid synthesized from morphine, a derivative of the opium poppy. Heroin is a highly addictive drug and is the most widely abused of the opiates. Heroin can be injected, smoked, or sniffed/snorted. Injection is the most efficient way to administer low-purity heroin. Frequent abuse of Heroin has a high potential for causing addiction and quickly leads to tolerance. If sustained abuse of heroin is stopped for as little as three days, withdrawal symptoms will appear. Heroin is used as a recreational drug because of the intense euphoria it induces, which diminishes as tolerance increases.

Some abusers mix heroin with cocaine in a “speedball” or “snowball” that usually is injected intravenously, smoked, or snorted, producing a more intense rush than abusing heroin by itself, but the combination of the drugsis more dangerous because the combination of the short-acting stimulant with the longer-acting depressant increases the risk of seizure, overdose, or death.

Risks Associated with Heroin Abuse include:

• The risk of contracting blood-borne diseases, such as, HIV and hepatitis
• The risk of contracting bacterial or fungal infections
• Poisoning from contaminants added to cut/dilute heroin
• Constipation
• Addiction with an increasing tolerance.
• Physical dependence can result from use of all opioids that will result in withdrawal symptoms upon ceasing of use.
• Decreased kidney function.
• Death

Heroin Abuse Requires Special Treatment

At Seacliff Recovery Center heroin addiction treatment, we understand the pain and suffering that can make it tough to get clean from heroin. Heroin addicts often have many serious physical and psychological problems that can be dangerous to themselves or others if not properly cared for. Our knowledgeable staff can help heroin abusers overcome their unique challenges in a safe, structured environment.

Individual Attention & Extended Recovery

Getting clean takes courage, guidance, and structure. Seacliff Recovery Center offers intervention, detox, medication and treatment to conquer heroin addiction. Our world-class clinical staff offers daily individual attention to get to the heart of the problem, deal with the wreckage and build the framework for a new, sobriety-based life.

We offer affordable, effective rehabilitation on the cutting-edge. Heroin addiction requires extended care. We offer 30, 60 and 90-day programs tailored to the individual’s needs. We blend clinical and holistic methods to renew mind, body and spirit while restoring relationships, goals and purpose. This prepares our clients for long-term sobriety, allowing our program to excel where others fail.

The withdrawal syndrome from heroin may begin starting from within 6 hours of discontinuation of use of the drug. This timeframe can generally fluctuate with the degree of tolerance and the amount of the last consumed dose.

Symptoms may include:

• sweating
• malaise/anxiety
• depression
• yawning
• tears
• insomnia
• cold sweats
• chills
• severe muscle and bone aches
• nausea/vomiting
• diarrhea
• goose bumps
• cramps
• fever
• coma
• death

Users going “cold turkey” (withdrawal without using counteractive drugs or symptom-reducing), are more likely to experience the negative effects of withdrawal in a more pronounced manner.

From the medical effects of heroin addiction to social problems, Seacliff Recovery Center’s heroin addiction treatment program brings solutions to the clients in a way that is tangible and easy to apply. Taking this into consideration we have put together to program that takes the mind body spirit approach to the client’s lives. We think that this is the best way to bring the clients all of the heroin treatment opportunities that we have.

Webster’s Dictionary defines alcoholism as: a chronic disorder marked by excessive and usually compulsive drinking of alcohol leading to psychological and physical dependence or addiction. We know it to be far more than that. Alcoholism destroys families, friendships, careers, and lives. It robs an individual of their health, dignity, reputation, and sanity.

All to often we hear these words, ” If he new what the was doing to his family he’d just stop”, or “She should just stop after a couple, it’s just a matter of will power. She must just be weak”. Believe it or not, an alcoholics strong will often stands in the way of them getting the help they need so much. They believe that they will figure it out and learn how to control their drinking and that they do have the power to stop at any time. The belief that they are in control may keep them from seeking the help that they need.

Our Seacliff Recovery Center family knows and understands the true nature of the beast that is alcoholism. We know that it is possible to recover from alcoholism and lead a happy productive life once again. Our certified counselors have helped hundreds of alcoholics learn what they need to know and do to get their lives back on track.

If methamphetamine has hijacked your life or the life of someone you love, our meth addiction treatment program can get them sober and back on the right track. We have over 10 years of experience successfully treating methamphetamine addiction.

Methamphetamines are a highly addictive central nervous system stimulants that can be snorted, smoked, injected, or ingested orally. Methamphetamine users feel an intense “rush” when they first take the drug. Immediately after taking meth, other effects include increased activity and decreased appetite. Methamphetamines have a limited medical use and are often used to treat narcolepsy, attention deficit disorders, and obesity. Methamphetamine is a drug chemically related to amphetamine but with stronger effects on the central nervous system. Street names for the drug include “speed”, “meth”, “crystal” and “crank.” Long-term methamphetamine abuse almost always leads to addiction, violent behavior, anxiety, insomnia, and other types of mood disturbances, and violent patterns of behavior. Additionally, psychotic symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, and paranoia will occur and these symptoms can last for months or even years after methamphetamine use has ceased.

Of an estimated 115 million emergency room (ER) visits in the U.S. throughout 2009, there are estimates that roughly 108,905 ER visits were associated with methamphetamine abuse.

At Seacliff Recovery Center we have developed a meth treatment program that is highly effective in meth addiction treatment. Because meth stays in a person’s body longer than other drugs like cocaine or alcohol, a longer program is generally recommended to treat such an addiction. Our 90 day meth additction treatment program is far more effective than 30 day regimens. After initial detoxification and treatment for any psychiatric symptoms and life-threatening conditions such as extreme high blood pressure and heart rate, the healing can begin.
Meth Abuse Requires Unique Treatment

Methamphetamine addiction takes it’s toll and leaves serious physical and psychological problems that can be dangerous if not properly treated. Methamphetamine addicts may lose their teeth quickly from a condition known as “meth mouth”. This effect is not caused by any corrosive effects of the drug itself. The American Dental Association, meth mouth “is probably caused by a combination of drug-induced psychological and physiological changes resulting in xerostomia (dry mouth), extended periods of poor oral hygiene, frequent consumption of high calorie, carbonated beverages and tooth grinding and clenching.” Like other drugs which stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, methamphetamine can cause decreased production of acid-fighting saliva and increased thirst, the result of which is an increased risk for tooth decay, especially when thirst is quenched by high-sugar drinks. Users may also exhibit sexually compulsive behaviors while using meth and the potential dangers of unprotected sex or other reckless sexual behavior may contribute to the increased spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among abusers of methamphetamines. Among other sexual side-effects reported by methamphetamine users are: the ability to have sex for long periods of time, increased libido and sexual pleasure, and an inability to reach orgasm or physical release. Methamphetamine abuse in the US is highest in Native Hawaiians and Pacific islander populations (2.2%), as well as, among Native Americans (1.7%), Whites (0.7%) and Hispanics (0.5%), and much lower in Asians (0.2%) and blacks (0.1%). According to one study in large cities, 13% of men having sex with men used methamphetamine in the previous 6 months.

Methamphetamine addiction basically has three patterns: low use, binge use, and high use. Low-use addiction describes a user who does not have psychological addiction to meth but uses methamphetamine on a casual basis by ingesting or snorting it. Binge and high-use abusers have a psychological addiction to meth and prefer smoking or injecting methamphetamine to achieve a faster and stronger high. As with the abuse of other stimulants, it is possible for individuals to become quickly addicted to methamphetamines. Withdrawal symptoms associated with discontinuing methamphetamine use include: fatigue, depression, and disturbance of sleep patterns. Further, taking high doses of a meth may result in dangerously high body temperature and an irregular heartbeat. There is also the potential for cardiovascular failure or lethal seizures.

Methamphetamine withdrawal’s, length and severity of depression is related to how much/often Meth was used. Some withdrawal symptoms including, cravings, exhaustion, depression, mental confusion, restlessness, insomnia, deep or disturbed sleep, may last up to 48 hours.

Cocaine is the most potent natural stimulant. Cocaine can be snorted, smoked, or injected. When snorted, cocaine is absorbed into the bloodstream through the nasal tissues. When injected, a needle is used to release the drug directly into the bloodstream. Smoking or cooking involves inhaling cocaine vapor or smoke into the lungs where absorption into the bloodstream is as rapid as by injection. Each of these methods of administration pose great risks to the user.

Cocaine is a very strong central nervous system (CNS) stimulant. Physical effects of cocaine use include:

• constricted blood vessels
• increased temperature
• increased heart rate
• increased blood pressure

Abusers of Cocaine also often experience feelings of restlessness, irritability, and Cocaine anxiety, evidence also suggests that users who inject or smoke cocaine may be at even greater risk of addiction than those who snort the substance. A tolerance to cocaine can grow very quickly and many cocaine addicts report that they fail to achieve as much pleasure as they did from their first cocaine high.

Cocaine rehabilitation: Cocaine Abuse Needs Special Treatment

Cocaine addicts often have many serious physical and psychological problems that can be dangerous to themselves or others if not properly cared for. At Seacliff Recovery Center, we can help cocaine abusers overcome their unique challenges to recovery with our expert Cocaine addiction treatment.
Cocaine addiction can occur very quickly and be very difficult to break after usage. People addicted to cocaine will go to great lengths to get cocaine and continue to take it even when it hurts their social performances and relationships with loved ones. Regular use of cocaine can lead to strong psychological addiction. Those who abruptly stop cocaine abuse can experience cocaine withdrawal symptoms as they adjust to functioning without using again. The length of cocaine withdrawal varies from person to person and on the amount and frequency of use.

Cocaine withdrawal symptoms include but are not limited to:

• agitation
• depression
• intense craving for the drug
• extreme fatigue
• anxiety
• angry outbursts
• lack of motivation
• nausea/vomiting
• shaking
• irritability
• muscle pain
• disturbed sleep

I had spent 7 years buried in my addiction. I found myself wanting to stop but just did not know how. Eventually I lost everything that I thought was important to me. Jobs, money, relationships and almost my life. I ended up in the ER where I was told I had “flat lined” from my overdose of pills and alcohol. It was then I knew something had to change. I had to change. But how? I needed help and had no idea of how that was to happen. My family, in their last ditch effort to save my life, found Seacliff Recovery Center. I entered their 90 day residential treatment program figuring I really didn’t have anything to lose anyway. To my amazement I began to hear what the counselors and therapists had to say. This was no ordinary rehab center (which I was afraid of). Their ability to relate to my greatest fears and the darkness I had lived in for so long gave me a feeling of belonging again. I ended up staying on in their sober living program for an additional 3 months after completing the 90 day program and that was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my young life. I have nowf been able to stay clean and sober for over 2 years and I am back to doing what I love to do which is play music. My group has just signed with a record label and we leave for our month long European tour next month. I have my family back in my life and friends that are truly friends. I will be forever grateful to Seacliff and their staff for everything they did (and continue to do) me and my family.
